Adrian Moreno: From Football Success to Engineering Greatness

In a world where stars, rankings, and NIL deals often dominate the recruiting spotlight, Adrian Moreno’s journey stands out as a powerful reminder of what truly matters—discipline, academics, and heart.
Adrian Moreno began his football journey as a youth quarterback with dreams like many others: play Division 1 football and maybe one day suit up in the NFL. His early years were filled with competitive 7-on-7 play during a time when the format was exploding across California. From standout performances in the Cal State All-Star Game for Derek Burrell to the FCA All-Stars and ultimately the newly formed Pro Way Central Valley team, Adrian’s name was becoming known on the field.
But as talented as he was, a pivotal moment came during a college tour with his California Recruits and Pro Way teammates. While visiting an Arizona State spring practice, Adrian turned to Coach Dejon and said, “Coach, those are D1 LBs.” Coach responded, “Yes, you see the size difference from high school?” That day, the reality of Division 1 football hit home—not as a dream deferred, but as a decision point.
Adrian stayed focused. His senior year at Bakersfield High School, he posted a 4.0 GPA while dominating on the field as a first-team All-Valley linebacker. Still, the offers didn’t roll in. Eventually, New Mexico Highlands reached out with an opportunity, but they didn’t offer the one thing Adrian cared deeply about: engineering.
That’s when California Recruits went to work. The linebacker coach from Colorado School of Mines—who is now the head coach at the University of San Diego—saw something special in Adrian. He liked what he saw and recruited him. Adrian committed, knowing he’d get the best of both worlds: high-level football and a top-tier education.
The results speak for themselves.
In 2022, Adrian Moreno completed his B.S. in Biochemistry, and by May 2023, he was walking the graduation stage. On the field, he was just as dominant:
• First-Team All-RMAC
• NFFCC Second-Team All-Colorado
• Starting middle linebacker, appearing in all 16 games
• Fourth on the team in total tackles (58)
• 3.0 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, a forced fumble in the NCAA quarterfinals
• Career-high 11 tackles in the national championship against Ferris State
He finished his collegiate journey not only as a football standout but now, with a Master’s degree in hand, he’s stepping into a future even bigger than football.
“No D1. No stars. No NIL,” said Coach Dejon. “But Adrian Moreno will be just fine—believe me.”
Adrian’s story reminds us all that success isn’t only about hype—it’s about heart, hard work, and having a plan beyond the game.
